Kutcher Hyped (And Skyped) Over 'Spread'

Star Uses Innovative Way To Get Word Out On New Movie

POSTED: 11:22 am EDT August 12, 2009

With the quickly evolving world of multimedia at his disposal, leave it to Twitter ace Ashton Kutcher to come up with an innovative way of spreading the word about his latest projects.

For his new movie, the sex comedy "Spread," Kutcher did an @ The Movies interview with me face to face in a virtual setting over Skype -- the wildly popular software application which allows users to make video and audio calls online.

Opening in limited release Friday, "Spread" follows the provocative exploits of Nikki (Kutcher), a 20-something Hollywood dreamer who sleeps his way across LA to get a taste of the highlife: a free-wheeling lifestyle that enchants an older woman (Anne Heche) but hits the wall when the charmer meets a stunning waitress (Margarita Levieva) who's onto his game.

During the recent virtual press junket for "Spread," Kutcher documented his day through the use of Tweets and an ongoing video stream on Ustream.tv, giving fans an opportunity to chat with the star behind the scenes.

"I think it's a real cool way to connect with your fans," Kutcher enthused. "What I enjoy about it more than the promotional aspect of it is the collaborative aspect of it. I can actually sit here and actually talk with people (while I'm doing interviews). I'm thinking about doing a word game where somebody sends in a word and we put it into the interview … I find that more intriguing and enticing."
