Director James Cameron's worldwide blockbuster "Avatar" will make its debut on DVD and Blu-ray in April to coincide with Earth Day.

Studio 20th Century Fox announced Tuesday that the film will debut on home video April 22. The features of the DVD and Blu-ray were not detailed.

The story of an ex-Marine who comes to befriend the indigenous population of a distant planet being mined of its natural resources by an aggressive corporation from Earth, "Avatar" stars Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Wes Studi and Laz Alonso.

The film, hailed for its groundbreaking visual effects and 3-D presentation, was nominated for nine Oscars in February, including notices for Best Picture and Best Director for Cameron. it took home three during the ceremony in March, including statuettes for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.

"Avatar" is currently the highest-grossing film in history, having accumulated $2.6 billion worldwide. It holds the North American box office record with $730 million in ticket sales to date.
