'Twlight' Sequel Falters; Latest Disney Hand-Drawn Movie Soars

'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' (PG-13) Heavy on melodrama and lighter on vampire action, fans of the "Twilight" book series will likely love "New Moon," the second movie chapter in the film saga. Casual movie fans, however, will want to drive a stake into it.

The latest segment picks up with Bella's (Kristen Stewart) 18th birthday celebration -- but a near-tragedy at the party makes her vampire boyfriend Edward (Robert Pattinson) realize that it's best the two live apart.

After months of isolation, Bella begins to move on with her life, beginning what may possibly be a romantic relationship with Jacob (Taylor Lautner). The problem is, Jacob is fulfilling his destiny by becoming a member of his tribe's wolf pack -- and the werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies.

By shuttling the original film's brooding, gothic horror aspirations in favor of syrupy, melodramatic teen heartache, "New Moon" kills any ambitions of capturing any audience beyond high school girls in this second go-round.

The good news is, the one-note Stewart from the first "Twilight" film turns in a much better performance this time around and Lautner is given more room to show off his natural charm. On the flip side, Pattinson delivers a lifeless performance, even for playing one of the undead. Let's hope the three get in sync for the third film, already due in theaters this summer.

Bonus features: Audio commentary with director Chris Weitz and editor Peter Lambert; a six-part making of documentary; music videos and more.(Summit Home Entertainment)

'The Princess and the Frog' (G) Walt Disney's animation studios return to traditional hand-drawn filmmaking in grand style in "The Princess and the Frog," a film that puts a unique spin on what people need to do to make their dreams come true.

Anika Noni Rose delivers a powerhouse performance as both the speaking and singing voice of Tiana, a New Orleans girl who works hard to see her and her late father's (Terrence Howard) dream of owning a restaurant come to fruition. But along the way, Tiana's plans are waylaid after she plants a kiss on Naveen (Bruno Campos), a handsome prince who was turned into a frog by a local witch doctor (Keith David). The kiss, as it turns out, turns Tiana into a frog, too.

The colors are vibrant and the atmosphere is magical in "The Princess and the Frog," and the lesson of working hard to attain your dreams is a great message for today's young audiences. Frequent Disney-Pixar composer Randy Newman also brings his musical magic to the film with some rousing blues and jazz numbers, which are fully realized by the likes of Rose, blues legend Dr. John and Jim Cummings, who provides the voice of an illuminating firefly.

Honored with a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination, as well as two nominations for Best Original Song for Newman, "The Princess and the Frog" marks strong comeback for the animated genre, which has been in peril in recent years with the surge of computer animation.

Bonus features: The three-disc Blu-ray plus DVD set includs filmmaker introductions and audio commentary; a "work in progress" option; deleted scenes; multiple production featurettes; Ne-Yo "Never Knew I Needed" video; "What Do You See?" Princess Portrait game; "Drawing the Frog" Easter egg. (Walt Disney Home Entertainment)
