Sonsona Can't Make Weight, WBO Jr. Bantamweight Belt Vacant

POSTED: 8:03 pm EST November 21, 2009

(Sports Network) - Marvin Sonsona, the WBO super flyweight champ, lost his title early Saturday by not making the appropriate weight prior to his scheduled bout against Alejandro Hernandez for the WBO junior bantamweight belt.

The 19-year-old Sonsona (14-0, 12 KO) weighed in at 117.6 pounds, more than two pounds over the maximum for the class. Hernandez (22-7-1, 12 KO), though, came in at 115 pounds even.

That means Hernandez will be the lone fighter to contest the vacant belt in a bout at an undetermined future date.

It was a tough outcome for Sonsona, who took the super flyweight crown last September against Jose Lopez.
