INDIANAPOLIS -- Some users of an Indianapolis trail claim overgrown trees and weeds have made the pathway unsafe.Limbs dangle over parts of the Fall Creek Greenway between 38th and 56th streets, while in other areas, the concrete is falling apart, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported."It certainly can be a hazard on certain areas of the trail," said trail user Bethany Troutman. "I think it should be cleaned up if it's getting in the way of enjoying the trail."
Sherry Berry said the overgrowth is dangerous for walkers like her."This is why I carry my stick," she said. "They used to keep it a lot more groomed."The city's eight greenways are made up of 59 miles of trails, with an upkeep budget of $75,000 a year. Indy Parks officials said there is $9,000 left for the year, which is expected to be used to replace vandalized signs."We have limited resources. We prioritize from emergency to non-emergency," said spokeswoman Paula Freund. "Public safety is our No. 1 priority."Freund said workers would be sent out to inspect areas of the Fall Creek Greenway to determine a plan of action to deal with the overgrowth and other upkeep issues. The Monon Trail, the city's most popular greenway, is the only trail with a dedicated team to handle daily maintenance issues.More Information: Indy Parks Greenway Information
