INDIANAPOLIS -- A person claiming to be deaf is getting through to businesses that normally don't deal with phone solicitations as part of an apparent scam. The West 86th Street location of Indianapolis-based Cookie Cutters, which operates children's hair salons, recently received a suspicious call on the phone relay system used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing, 6News' Rafael Sanchez reported.Cookie Cutters' Operation Manager Christie Fossett said the business usually doesn't take phone solicitations, but listened to the request because of the relay system, which requires the individual type their message, while an operator relays the message to the other end.
A man using the name of Toby Goodman said he wanted to arrange hair cuts for 145 children on Friday. He provided the store with a credit card number, PIN and expiration date, with instructions to charge the $3,200 bill. But Fossett said she became suspicious when Goodman asked that a $1,200 tip for the bus driver bringing the children be sent via Western Union to an address in Montana."As a small business that's quite a bit of money to be out," Fossett said. "They are using the relay calls typically used by the deaf to make it seem legitimate."6News checked the address and determined it was an empty field. The credit card, which VISA confirmed was valid, was canceled by the Pennsylvania-based bank that had issued the card.Cookie Cutters sent a warning to all of its stores in six states and Canada about the possible scam.
