Walt Disney Fax Offer Not What It Seems

Timeshare Offer Behind Vacation Special

A special offering a great deal to the "happiest place on earth" may leave some customers feeling misled.

Call 6 investigated a random faxed advertisement that offers a vacation deal to Walt Disney World in Orlando -- a five-day, four-night vacation for $169 where kids stay free and admission to any Disney park is included.

But learned that families will still have to pay for children to get into the park under the deal.

Call 6's Rafael Sanchez called the number provided to hear the sales pitch.

Operator: Did you just receive the advertisement?
    Call 6: Yes.
Operator: OK, the only reason that I ask is that I am showing this special may be close to selling out.
Sanchez: Oh, OK, close to selling out.
Operator: We normally sell this vacation for $400 per person.

Call 6 learned that the fax is really a front for a timeshare offer. In order to get the deal, individuals must sit through two sales pitches, and don't receive the tickets until a presentation on the second day. By then, the company has plenty of personal information about you, Sanchez reported.

Operator: Do you normally use a Visa/Mastercard or American Express when you travel?
    Call 6 : Neither.
Operator: Do you possess one as a second form of ID?
    Call 6: Yes.
Operator: Are you between the ages 21 and 65?
    Call 6 : Yes))
Operator: And lastly, Is your combined household income at least $40,000 per year?
    Call 6: Yes.
    Operator: You definitely qualify.

Call 6 checked with Vicki Johnson, who works in travel promotion at Disney. She said the faxed offer was not a package offered by the Walt Disney company.

According to the Indiana Attorney General's Office, the company would only have to disclose the information about the timeshare offer if it was tied to a prize, Sanchez reported.
