Geist homeowners believe it's a matter of safety, but state officials don't want it banned.
There is nothing illegal about geese hunting that started on Labor Day weekend at Geist Reservoir.
Some homeowners told Call 6 For Help that goose hunting is not a safe sport in their neighborhood.
Resident Cindy Fleming said she routinely finds spent gun shells in her back yard. She said she isn't opposed to hunting, but is concerned about safety because of the proximity to houses.
Others worried that that jet skiers and others could unknowingly get in the way and become an accidental target.
"It might have been OK to hunt 25 years ago when it was a wilderness area, but it's not OK now," homeowner Julie Crowe said.
Call 6's Rafael Sanchez saw no hunting signs on one of the islands in the middle of the lake community where homeowners said people point and shoot. Residents said the signs are ignored.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, whose officers patrol Geist, said officials were reviewing if the situation is a state or city issue.
"I am hopeful the city does not prohibit hunting on Geist," DNR director Kyle Hupfer said, adding that the hunters cut down on the population of nuisance geese.
Hupfer said he believes some hunters are hunting inappropriately, causing homeowners concerns.
DNR is stepping up efforts to make sure people are following the rules.
DNR officials said goose hunting occurs in other lake communities in Indiana. So, Geist falls within the rules.
There is a city ordinance that prohibits gun firing within its limits. DNR officials were reviewing that ordinance and its rules.
