Man: I Finished Child-Support Payments, But State Sought More

POSTED: 4:00 pm EST November 9, 2005

After making child-support payments for nearly two decades, Ken Slater was relieved when the obligation ended in May. The relief evaporated, however, when the state notified his employer that he still owed $48,000.

Slater, of Peru, knew the state was wrong, but he feared he didn't have enough money to hire an attorney to seek a correction.

So, Slater contacted Call 6 for Help, which got in touch with the state Department of Child Services.

The department learned that Slater's case had been transferred to several counties, and when he finished his obligation in May, the case was not closed, causing the mistake.

Department spokeswoman Susan Tielking said the state called Slater's employer to say that his obligation had been met.
