CARMEL, Ind. -- Indiana homeowners are going the extra mile to save money on heating bills.Mike Germain, of Security Home Inspections, uses an infrared camera to show places in a home where heat is escaping. The camera shows the trouble spots with ease.Germain said escalating heating costs have homeowners looking for more advanced ways to get homes better prepared for the winter.
"I think people are becoming more conscious just like we're back in the '70's," Germain said. The escaping heat translates into dollars wasted to heat Barbara Engle's 28-year-old home."You get that gas bill every month and it's high. What can I do?" Engle asked.Engle called Security Home Inspections to help figure out how she could save money on her utility bill. The most common areas of heat loss are usually doors and windows in need of new weather stripping, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.Germain also found places around the home that need more insulation, such as a bedroom. The infrared camera can pick up heat loss in ceilings, around electrical outlets and behind the walls of homes.Engle is paying several hundred dollars to find a long-term solution to a heating bill she said burns her every month. An infrared inspection is separate from a house inspection. Infrared inspections typically cost between $200 and $300, Sanchez reported.Energy Saving Tips Save Money On Energy Bills Winterize Your Home
