INDIANAPOLIS -- Before Lee Dile bought a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina from a used-car dealer, he was informed that the car's mileage was less than 100,000 miles. After the purchase, he learned the number was much higher.Dile said that before his Dec. 23 purchase from Calcars on Southeastern Avenue, he was shown an odometer disclosure form that said the car had been driven for 96,926 miles. He thought that number was good for a 10-year-old car, so he bought the vehicle."(The dealer) said I would have to pay $5,000 plus interest because it was such a good car with such low mileage," Dile told Call 6 for Help's Rafael Sanchez.
But when Dile received the car's title, the title showed that the vehicle's mileage was 196,926.Dile contacted Call 6, which did some online research. Call 6 learned that the vehicle had been registered with the state at 160,000 miles in 2004."I felt like I was ripped off. I felt like I was taken," Dile said.Calcars' manager, Jack Russell, told Sanchez that this has happened before, and that refunds have been made in such cases. An attorney for Calcars said that the business gets odometer readings correct 99 percent of the time. The business wants to refund Dile's money, the attorney said.Sanchez told Call 6 viewers Monday that anyone who suspects odometer fraud can contact the state at (800) 382-5516.
