IUPUI (0-1) Vs. Michigan Tech (0-1)
GAME NOTES: The IUPUI Jaguars and Michigan Tech Huskies will try to earn a win before leaving Ann Arbor, as they take on one another in consolation action of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Classic.
The Jaguars failed in their bid to move on in the tournament with a season- opening 73-60 loss to Northeastern yesterday. The setback was not something head coach Ron Hunter was expecting following a 2007-08 season in which the team posted 26 wins.
Kevin Luke's Huskies were fighting an uphill battle, having to take on host Michigan in opening round action on Tuesday. The result was a 77-55 rout at the hands of the Wolverines. The Division II school went 13-14 a year ago.
The usually solid shooting Jaguars were anything but in the season-opener against Northeastern, as IUPUI shot just under 40 percent from the floor, including a dismal .118 from behind the arc (2-of-17). It was certainly a surprising lack of accuracy from a team that led the nation in three-pointers a year ago. Part of the problem was certainly the absence of standout guard Gary Patterson (12.9 ppg), who will miss a few weeks with a broken hand. Robert Glenn filled the void a bit off the bench, leading all scorers with 19 points. Alex Young added 17 points and six boards, while LeRoy Nobles finished with 10 points. The Jaguars will certainly need more production from the remaining starters in the lineup, as Jon Avery and Billy Pettiford managed a combined six points.
The Huskies had their own problems shooting the basketball yesterday, as the team converted just 36.1 percent from the floor, including 23.1 percent from behind the arc (6-of-26). In addition, Michigan Tech turned the ball over 15 times and could do nothing to stop Michigan's standout guard Manny Harris, who erupted for 30 points in the game. Michigan Tech was led offensively by Georgio Holt, as the forward hit 5-of-12 from the floor to finish with 12 points. Fedrick Bowe and Chris Baugh each added nine points in defeat. The Wolverines took an 18-point lead into halftime and although the Huskies made a game of it in the second stanza, the deficit was too great to overcome.
IUPUI may struggle to find its shot without Patterson in the lineup, but that shouldn't prevent the Jaguars from earning their first victory of the season against Michigan Tech.
