GAME NOTES: The Kent State Golden Flashes continue to host the Hispanic College Fund Classic, and they entertain the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix today.

On Friday, UW-Green Bay suffered a disappointing loss to UAB by a 68-56 final, but the Phoenix bounced back with a 70-68 triumph over Samford yesterday. The team was recently selected to finish fifth in a Horizon League preseason poll, a middle-of-the-road projection. The Phoenix ripped off 22 victories last season and posted an outstanding 13-1 ledger at home, but with three 1,000- point scorers no longer on the roster, it would be mildly shocking for Green Bay to achieve that level of success again here in 2009-10.

Coming off a 19-win campaign in 2008-09, the Golden Flashes are primed for an even better 2009-10 season, thanks to the return of plenty of veteran players and several strong newcomers. Kent State, which is a member of the Mid- American Conference, opened its season on Friday with a 69-66 decision over Samford, and then moved to 2-0 yesterday with a 72-65 victory over UAB.

Kent State has won both of its previous meetings with UW-Green Bay, the most recent of which took place in 2000.

Against UAB in the opener, UW-Green Bay scored just five points during a near 10-minute span in the second half, the main reason for the loss. Rahmon Fletcher scored a team-high 14 points in defeat, and Bryquis Perine added 13 points for the Phoenix. In Yesterday's clash with Samford, Green Bay got 22 points from Fletcher, who shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Troy Cotton pitched in 16 points, as he nailed 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc. The third and final double-digit scorer in the win was Seth Evans, who connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers en route to 10 points. A stellar 12-of-21 effort from behind the arc was perhaps the most obvious reason that Green Bay won the game. That showing overshadowed a 12-2 deficit in points from the foul line.

Mike McKee played 25 minutes off the bench for Kent State yesterday, and he led the way with 19 points against UAB on the strength of a 4-of-7 showing from three-point range. Rodriguez Sherman added 17 points on 7-of-9 efficiency from the field, and Tyree Evans pitched in 10 points. The Golden Flashes connected on 49 percent of their field goal attempts in the tilt and shot 16- of-22 from the foul line. Defensively, they limited the Blazers to 39.3 percent shooting efficiency from the floor. Three players scored in double figures for Kent State in the season-opening win over Samford. Chris Singletary led the charge with 19 points, while Justin Greene and Evans pitched in 11 points apiece. The Golden Flashes committed a mere six turnovers in the tilt, somewhat overshadowing a lackluster 14-of-27 showing from the foul line.

The home team is the choice in this battle, as Kent State will remain perfect on the young season. Strong defense and balanced scoring will once again be the team's formula for success.
