Xavier To Elevate Assistant Mack To Head Coach

POSTED: 6:29 pm EDT April 14, 2009

(Sports Network) - Xavier University announced Tuesday that assistant Chris Mack will be introduced as the new men's head basketball coach on Wednesday.

Mack will be officially welcomed to the fold at an afternoon press conference Wednesday, succeeding outgoing head coach Sean Miller, who signed a five-year contract to take the same position at the University of Arizona earlier this month.

Mack, 39, was an assistant under Miller for the past five seasons and will now become the program's 17th head coach. The duo helped the Musketeers to a record of 120-47 with four NCAA Tournament appearances over that span. After an Elite Eight run in 2008, this year's squad finished 27-8 and lost to Pittsburgh in the East Region semifinals after capturing a third consecutive A-10 regular-season title.

This will be Mack's first head coaching position.

Mack returned to Xavier in 2004 after serving as two-time team captain as a player during his junior and senior seasons with the Musketeers. Mack went on to become Xavier's Director of Basketball Operations from 1999-2001 and spent the next three seasons as an assistant coach at Wake Forest under the late former Xavier head coach Skip Prosser.
