GAME NOTES: The 101st battle of the Apple Cup will take place this Saturday afternoon, when the Washington State Cougars host the Washington Huskies at Martin Stadium. This has been a nightmare of a season for Washington, which has dropped all 10 of its game this year. The most recent setback for Washington came this past weekend, as the team was defeated by UCLA, 27-7, at home. As for the Cougars, they have not been much better on the year, as the team has just one win, and heads into this contest with a seven-game losing skid. The last time WSU was on the field the team was dominated by Arizona State, 31-0. The loss left the Cougars with a 0-8 mark inside conference play. The first 100 matchups of this series have been dominated mostly by the Huskies, who have a 64-30-6 edge over Washington State. In terms of the battle for the Apple Cup, which was instituted in 1962, the Huskies have won the trophy 32 times in 45 meetings. The Huskies have really struggled on the offensive side of things, as the team comes into this matchup averaging a pathetic 13.9 ppg. The ground game has been virtually non-existent, racking up just 86.4 rushing ypg, and the passing attack has been almost as bad, as the Huskies are throwing for 177.1 ypg. Ronnie Fouch has been horrendous under center, completing just 43.6 percent of his throws for 1,224 and four touchdowns, but also has 11 interceptions. Washington's terrible offensive play continued in the loss to UCLA, as the team racked up just 135 total yards. Washington, which committed five turnovers in the loss, finished with just 96 rushing yards on 3.2 ypc. Two of the turnovers were interceptions thrown by Fouch, who finished with just 39 yards on 7-of-22 passing. On top of the poor offensive play, the defense has been just as bad, as Washington is surrendering 453.4 total ypg, and that has led to 39.9 ppg. The Huskies have struggled against the run and pass, surrendering 228.5 rushing ypg, while allowing another 224.9 ypg through the air. Washington has also been unable to make big plays, grabbing just nine turnovers, while recording only 10 sacks. Surprisingly in the matchup against UCLA, the Huskies only allowed 292 total yards. Despite the strong showing, the Huskies still fell to the Bruins. Washington did force three turnovers in the loss, but allowed UCLA to convert on all four of its red zone chances. Just like their counterpart, the Cougars have been terrible on the offensive side of the football, averaging just 236.4 total ypg, while posting an equally poor 12.6 ppg. Logwone Mitz has been the main tailback for WSU over the past few games, but has just 315 rushing yards and two scores thus far. The quarterback position has been manned by four different players, but right now the person taking snaps is Kevin Lopina. Lopina however, has been dreadful throwing for just 651 yards, and has 10 interceptions and no touchdowns. The pitiful display by the offense continued in the loss to Arizona State, as the Cougars racked up just 130 total yards. Lopina completed 11-of-16 passes in the loss, but for only 82 yards. J.T. Levenseller also saw time under center, but finished with just 41 yards and one interception. Sadly enough the defensive play has been worse, as Washington State is being abused for 460.3 total ypg, which has led to a whopping 48.5 ppg. The main problem for this unit has come against the run, as opponents are gashing the Cougars for 266.5 rushing ypg, and out of the 68 touchdowns allowed by WSU, 48 have come on the ground. The defense has also been unable to force big plays, collecting just 11 turnovers, while recording only 10 sacks. The defense was unable to do much against ASU, allowing the Sun Devils to collect 398 total yards. However, the unit was done in by the pass, allowing 257 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Mike Nixon led the way for Washington State, recording six tackles to go along with two TFLs and one interception. There is not many positive things that can be said about either team. With one win between the two teams, this could be a sloppy matchup. However, the Cougars are home, so they should be able to slip past Washington.
