NCAA Game Summary - Army At Temple

POSTED: 6:06 pm EDT October 17, 2009

(Sports Network) - Vaughn Charlton threw for 115 yards and two scores to guide the Temple Owls past the Army Black Knights, 27-13, in a non-conference affair at Lincoln Financial Field.

Bernard Pierce led the Owls'(4-2) ground attack, carrying the ball 11 times for 65 yards and a touchdown. The freshman back, however, left the game on a stretcher after a big hit just before the half and his status for the team's next game is up in the air.

The Black Knights (3-4) were led by quarterback Trent Steelman, who completed all five of his pass attempts for 56 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball 19 times for a team-high 67 yards.

Temple took an early 7-0 lead when Pierce capped off the opening drive of the game with a one-yard touchdown run.

The Owls added to their lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter, when Charlton hooked up with Jason Harper for a 37-yard touchdown strike. However, the point after was no good, leaving Temple with a 13-0 lead.

Army got on the board late in the first half with a 24-yard field goal by Alex Carlton to make it a 13-3 game at the break.

Carlton pulled his team closer midway through the third quarter, drilling a 23-yard field goal.

Army got back on the board minutes later, when Steelman found Ali Villanueva from four yards out to tie the game 13-13.

Temple regained the lead midway through the fourth quarter, as Charlton hooked up with Steve Maneri for a six-yard touchdown.

The Owls put the game away minutes later with a one-yard run from Kee-ayre Griffin to seal the 27-13 victory.

Temple has now won four straight games for the first time since 1985, as the Owls improved to 4-2 for the first time since 1986.
