Brown Gives Head Football Coach Contract Extension

POSTED: 10:27 pm EST December 15, 2003

Brown University announced Monday that it gave head football coach Phil Estes a multi-year contract extension.

Estes, who has spent the last six seasons as Bears' head coach, has a winning percentage .610 during his Brown tenure. He is the most successful coach at the school since Edward North Robinson, who completed his 24-year coaching career in 1925 with a .624 winning clip.

Overall, Estes is 36-23 at Brown, including a 26-16 mark in the Ivy League. He won the Ivy League championship in 1999 and became just the second coach in school history to win the crown.

During his time with the Bears, Estes has coached four Walter Payton Award finalists - wide receivers Sean Morey, Stephen Campbell and Chas Gessner and quarterback James Perry.

Estes became the fastest coach in Ivy League history to have his team score at least 1,000 points when the club scored 1,022 in Estes' first 32 games as head coach.
