Brown Receives Contract Extension At Texas

POSTED: 5:57 pm EST December 29, 2004

The University of Texas and head football coach Mack Brown agreed on a 10-year contract extension worth a reported $25 million. The deal, which needs approval from the school's board of regents, will keep Brown at the school through the 2014 campaign.

Brown has guided Texas to a 10-1 record this season and a berth in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day against Michigan. The only loss this year for the sixth-ranked Longhorns occurred on October 9, when they dropped a 12-0 decision to second-ranked Oklahoma, which will face Southern California for the national championship on January 4 in the Orange Bowl.

It marks the first-ever appearance in a BCS bowl game for Texas, which has recorded at least 10 wins in each of the last four years and has made a bowl game appearance in all seven years under Brown.

Brown was hired as the 28th head coach in the storied history of Longhorns football on December 4, 1997 and has compiled an overall mark of 69-19 with Texas.

With an 11-2 record in 2002, the Longhorns posted back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history and had consecutive top-10 finishes for the first time since 1977-78. Texas capped the year with a 35-20 victory over LSU in the Cotton Bowl.

Prior to arriving in Texas, Brown spent 10 years as the head coach at North Carolina. In 1990, the Tar Heels finished 6-4-1 and began a run of eight consecutive winning campaigns and six bowl game showings in a row.

Brown has also enjoyed head coaching experience at Tulane (1985-87) and Appalachian State (1983). In 21 years at the helm, he has compiled a 155-93-1 record.
