NCAA Game Summary - Eastern Washington At Texas Tech

POSTED: 1:06 am EDT August 31, 2008

(Sports Network) - Graham Harrell completed 43-of-58 passes for 536 yards with two touchdowns and added one on the ground, as the 12th- ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders opened the season with a 49-24 triumph over the Eagles of Eastern Washington.

Eric Morris and Detron Lewis each had nine receptions for 164 and 163 yards, respectively, for the Red Raiders (1-0), who are coming off a 9-4 mark last season that included a Gator Bowl victory over Virginia. Michael Crabtree, the nation's leading receiver in 2007, added nine catches for 73 yards, including a touchdown. Shannon Woods rushed for 37 yards and two touchdowns.

Matt Nichols threw for 335 yards on 36-of-61 passing with a touchdown and three costly interceptions for the Eagles (0-1). Tony Davis hauled in a game- high 13 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Texas Tech owned the first quarter. On the first play from scrimmage, Nichols was intercepted by Brian Duncan at the EWU 30, and the Red Raiders capitalized eight plays later on Woods' two-yard touchdown run. Texas Tech struck again on its next series, as Harrell's one-yard scoring plunge gave the home team a 13-0 edge with 8:32 remaining in the opening stanza, following a failed kick. In the waning moments of the quarter, Harrell finished off an epic 10-play, 90-yard drive with a four-yard strike to Crabtree. The Red Raiders led 21-0 following a two-point conversion, but EWU made a game of it in the second quarter.

Early in the frame, Harrell was picked off by Matt Johnson, who rumbled to the Texas Tech seven. A one-yard touchdown run by Alexis Alexander put the Eagles on the board, but Texas Tech found paydirt on its next possession to go up 28-7. Pinned at their own 10-yard line, the Red Raiders marched the length of the field in nine plays and Woods' one-yard TD rush capped the drive.

The Eagles, though, went into halftime down just 28-17 after Nichols ran it in from one yard out and Felipe Macias knocked through a 55-yarder as time expired.

Following the break, Harrell threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Edward Britton to push the Texas Tech lead to 35-17 with 4:51 left in the third quarter. But in the final minute of the frame, Nichols hooked up with Davis for a 30-yard score to pull within 35-24.

Aaron Crawford's six-yard scoring run and Baron Batch's 26-yard scamper into the end zone put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Game Notes:

This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs...Texas Tech has won its last nine season openers at home dating back to a loss to Oklahoma in 1992...It was the third time in as many seasons that Harrell threw for more than 500 yards in a game...Davis' catch total was the second most in school history, ranking only behind the 17 teammate Aaron Boyce had in 2007 against Montana...EWU's Brynsen Brown caught eight passes for 82 yards...Macias' field goal was the third-longest in school history.
