Genyk Out At Eastern Michigan

POSTED: 1:45 pm EST November 24, 2008

(Sports Network) - Eastern Michigan has fired head football coach Jeff Genyk, although he will remain with the team through its season finale on Friday against Central Michigan.

"Earlier this morning, after consulting President Susan Martin, I informed coach Jeff Genyk of my decision to move our football program in another direction, at the conclusion of this season," said EMU athletic director Dr. Derrick Gragg. "I thanked coach Genyk for his service to EMU, and offered him the opportunity to coach our teams final game this week against Central Michigan University, which he has accepted."

Eastern Michigan is just 2-9 this season and only 1-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles have not had a winning campaign under Genyk, who has a mark of 15-42 in five years as the school's head coach.

"Winning consistently in football has been a challenge for our institution long before the arrival of coach Genyk," Gragg added. "I credit coach Genyk and his entire staff for working tirelessly in attempting to improve our program."

The Eagles have not had a winning season since a 6-5 mark in 1995 and last won the MAC title in 1987 when they also beat San Jose State in the California Bowl.

Gragg also said that former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr has agreed to serve as an unpaid adviser throughout the search process for a new coach.
