An Indiana soldier was among 31 people wounded when an Army officer opened fire at the Fort Hood military base in Texas Thursday.

Cpl. Nathan A. Hewitt, 27, of Lafayette, told 6News by phone Thursday night from a Texas hospital that he can't remember much about what led up to the melee.

He said he was at the base medical center when a door swung open and people began yelling.

"I heard somebody shooting and I got down, and then I tried to get people out with me as I found a way to get out," Hewitt said.

One bullet grazed his hip, and another hit him in the calf. Still, Hewitt said he was worried about the other soldiers around him.

"There was people hurt worse than I was so I was trying to help them out before I helped myself," he said.

Hewitt is a 2000 Jefferson High School graduate and is stationed at Fort Hood awaiting deployment to Afghanistan. He has also served a tour of duty in Iraq.

The Indiana National Guard said Thursday it was not aware of any Indiana National Guard soldiers or airmen currently stationed or on duty at Fort Hood, Texas.

Officials said their thoughts are with soldiers and family members involved in the incident. At least 31 people were wounded and 13 people killed in the shooting.

Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. The base halfway between Austin and Waco was home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year.
