SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- Hundreds of people packed the Southport High School auditorium Monday night to learn the fate of suspended Superintendent Doug Williams, whose battle with the Perry Township school board has sparked a large petition drive and Web site in support of Williams.A vote to dismiss Williams earlier this month caused a great divide in Perry Township. A three-hour meeting did not determine Williams' ultimate fate with the school district, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

Angry residents took their frustrations out on the school board during the meeting. School board members who oppose Williams held their ground, saying he threatened them at an October meeting."I think you ought to be off the school board," one woman told one of Williams' detractors before she was told her time was up."I believe a sneak attack was purported on Dr. Williams, and I would very much like you to right that wrong," said another Williams supporter.People who don't support Williams also had their say."We're tired of his threats, his omissions of truth and his lack of cooperation," one woman said. Many parents, teachers and students applauded a move by board member Steve Maple to reinstate Williams and bring in mediation.A Southport High School student presented 600 signatures of students at the school in support of Williams, but the board again voted 4-3 to oppose reinstating the superintendent, who remains on paid leave.Williams' supporters vowed to continue their fight to get the superintendent back on the job.
