Bus Driver Could Be Disciplined For Train Incident

Camera Catches Vehicle Crossing Locomotive's Path

POSTED: 9:56 pm EST February 20, 2007

Video of a school bus crossing an approaching train's path could land the bus driver in trouble with his or her employer, 6News' Ben Morriston reported Tuesday.

The video was recorded Friday as Morriston and a 6News photographer rode on the train through Perry Township. On Tuesday, township school officials saw the video and said the driver -- if he or she can be identified -- could be disciplined.

"My very first reaction was, 'Wow, that was pretty close,'" said Mike Blue, transportation director for Perry Township schools, after watching the footage.

The bus appeared not to be carrying any children as it crossed the tracks near Southport and Bluff Roads. The crossing had warning lights -- though it wasn't clear whether the lights were activated when the bus approached -- and the train's horn was sounding.

The bus driver followed protocol by opening the side door at the crossing and flashing the bus's lights.

A state trooper said last week that regardless of whether a railroad crossing has gates or warning lights, vehicles must yield to a train that is within 1,500 feet of the crossing.

Blue said that based on what he saw on the video, he believes the bus driver should have waited for the train to cross.

School officials said the bus driver might not have seen the train. Trees can obstruct the view at that crossing.

Karen Cantou, spokeswoman for Perry Township schools, said warning lights at the crossing should come on sooner.

"It's still pretty darn close," Cantou said. "If you can hear the whistle and can see (the train) in any way, I think our policies are very strong. There are disciplinary actions that will take place."
