INDIANAPOLIS -- School board members who sparked controversy by suspending Perry Township's superintendent nearly six months ago voted Thursday to begin a process of terminating his contract. In a room packed with observers, the Perry Township school board voted 4-3 to inform Superintendent Douglas Williams that it will consider firing him at its June 11 meeting, 6News' Renee Jameson reported. The board had voted 4-3 in November to place Williams (pictured) on administrative leave with pay. The four who voted for the suspension also voted to begin the termination process on Thursday.
The panel has declined to officially list reasons for its actions against Williams. The moves were met with an uproar from many parents and teachers, some of whom are suing the board, alleging that the actions are illegal."We will keep fighting until we can return control of this school corporation to the citizens," said Teri Margason, who supports Williams. "Whether Dr. Williams comes back or not, we will not go away until the four members of the school board (who oppose Williams) are replaced."Steve Maple, a board member who has opposed the moves against the superintendent, said the panel's majority was "on a power trip.""It's significant interference in the entire administration by some board members," he said.According to the motion that passed Thursday, Williams can request a hearing before the board. If he does, the hearing will be held June 6 and, if necessary, continue on June 7.A court hearing on the lawsuit filed by Williams' supporters is scheduled for Wednesday.
