School Board To Appeal Ruling, Seek Superintendent's Ouster

Tumultuous School Board Meeting Continues Months Of Controversy

There was another tension-filled meeting of the Perry Township School Board Monday night as board members and the public continued to fight over the future of embattled superintendent Dr. Doug Williams.

School board members voted to appeal a federal court ruling that banned board member Nancy Walsh from voting on a motion to cancel Williams' contract, 6News Ericka Flye reported.

Board members lashed out at each other and an audience member was escorted out, accused of disrupting the meeting by clapping.

There were heated exchanges involving members of a clearly divided board, all part of the ongoing turmoil in the school system.

Board member Nancy Walsh was the subject of much of the scrutiny. Citing bias, a federal judge recently barred her from taking part in a meeting to cancel Williams' contract. She's also under fire for participating in a mock graduation ceremony for a group of suspended students.

"I knew at the time I handed out those diplomas that I was in my individual capacity," Walsh said. "I did not hand out those diplomas as an official board member."

After a motion by board president Susan Adams, the board's majority decided to appeal Walsh's banning from the Williams hearing and delay the vote until after a ruling on that appeal. Some said the move will drag the saga out indefinitely.

"This situation is a living nightmare for the constituents of this community," said Jennifer Mertz, who supports Williams.

"I think the end in sight has to be with the 7th Circuit (Court of Appeals), and that may take months," said board member Steve Maple.
