Superintendent Out After Contentious Board Meeting

Perry Township School Chief Gets Nearly $500,000 In Buyout

POSTED: 6:29 am EDT July 10, 2007

The bitter dispute between the Perry Township school board and its superintendent appears to be over after a crucial vote to accept a buyout.

The contract of Doug Williams was cancelled and he was given nearly $500,000 in the deal, which the board approved during a meeting Monday night, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

Several people were escorted out of the meeting after speaking their mind vociferously in support of Williams and against the school board during public comment.

"You are ruining public education in Perry Township," said one man.

The board voted 4-3 to suspend Williams in November and start proceedings to fire him in May, with some members accusing Williams of insubordination and neglect of duty.

Besides approving the deal, the board on Tuesday also elected new officers, with board member Barb Thompson replacing Susan Adams as president. Adams was part of the majority that suspended Williams in November.

"I'm happy that we've reached a settlement with Dr. Williams and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work," Thompson said.

The Williams issue caused turmoil, and much of that remains unresolved despite his ouster.

"I hope that you all surprise me. Unfortunately, I really have to say I don't believe you will," said one man.

The search for a new superintendent begins. Williams had no comment after the meeting.
