UPDATED: 6:24 pm EDT March 17, 2009

A Carmel middle school teacher has been placed on leave after he was charged with battery.

Robert C. Abraham, 48, of Fishers, was charged Monday with felony battery in connection with an incident that took place outside of work, said Libbie Conner, assistant superintendent for human resources for Carmel Clay Schools.

Conner did not release any details of the incident, but said that it did not involve any students or fellow employees.

Abraham is in his first year as a technology and business education teacher at Creekside Middle School and had passed a criminal background check before he was hired last August, Conner said.

Abraham previously worked at Anderson and Hamilton Southeastern high schools and at Poinciana High School in Kissimmee, Fla., Conner said.

He has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Attempts by 6News to get a copy of the probable cause affidavit in the case Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
