TRAFALGAR, Ind. -- Taxpayers in Trafalgar are divided ahead of a special election over a proposed $26 million school renovation project. The Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United School Corporation has proposed building a new school to replace the aging Indian Creek Elementary, 6News' Ben Morriston reported. The plan would also renovate Indian Creek High School and Indian Creek Intermediate School.A new state law means that instead of school officials simply voting on the plan, taxpayers will have a chance to weigh in during a special election set for May 19.
Members of the Indiana Creek Vote Yes political action committee support the proposal. One of the reasons they want a new elementary school is for safety."Anybody can walk in right now undetected," said member Robbie Chapman. "The safety and security of our children and learning environment we have for them cannot wait."Members of the opposing group, Now Is Not The Time, have put up signs around Trafalgar in opposition of what they called a costly plan."I'm pretty much against it right now," said member Kevin Walker. "I don't think now is the time to do what they want to do."While the issue is narrowly focused on just three townships, taxpayers in both Johnson and Morgan Counties will pay the $10,000 needed to run the special election.
