INDIANAPOLIS -- The campus of Butler University is on the other side of the world from the impoverished countryside of Uganda, but now they're united by a common thread: education.Members the campus group Ambassadors For Children rallied together after learning of the dire need for schools in the African country. Together, they raised $45,000 and traveled there to build the facility themselves, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported."It is our responsibility because we are people who are so privileged," said the group's president, Jennifer Pignolet. "We have so much here and sometimes we take it for granted."
The students worked side-by-side with locals to turn a pile of 50,000 handcrafted bricks into an operational school. Many of the facility's future students also helped in the construction."We saw so much hope. They saw us over there and just were so excited because we told them what we were doing and they could not be happier that we were building them this school," Pignolet said. "They came out to help us build it, they came out and gave us food while we were working. Just anything to make us build a little faster or help them a little bit more."Once the school was finished, the young students took a celebratory picture, hoisting their brand new pencils and pens over their heads. The group of Butler students is back home, but hoping to raise another $10,000 for furniture and uniforms.
