IU Tuition Increase Could Top 4 Percent

President McRobbie Makes Recommendation

POSTED: 1:55 pm EDT July 6, 2009

Indiana University could raise tuition more than 4 percent each of the next two school years.

IU President Michael McRobbie is recommending in-state tuition hikes of 4.6 percent this year and 4.8 percent next year at the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Tuition at IU's regional campuses could go up 4.4 this year and 4.6 percent next year.

Ivy Tech Community College is proposing tuition increases of about 4.9 percent this year and next.

Both IU and Ivy Tech announced Monday they would hold public hearings on the proposed increases July 16.

The state Commission for Higher Education recommended that IU increase tuition no more than 5 percent in each of the next two years. It said Ivy Tech should keep tuition increases to a maximum of 4 percent.

McRobbie said the increases and spending reductions are needed to ready the university for the possibility of a 6 percent cut in state funding in two years.

"We are recommending to trustees a tuition plan for the next two years that, together with increased financial aid, will mean that annual tuition payments for in-state IU students should decrease by an average of $177," McRobbie said. "The average out-of-pocket amount paid by Indiana residents for tuition and fees at IU has fallen by nearly 4 percent over the last three years, and we expect that trend to continue, even with the modest tuition increases we are recommending to our trustees."

The university is also implementing several spending restraints, including restrictions on travel and administrative hires.
