ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson Community School Corp. is making large-scale cuts that will result in the elimination of five schools. The school board approved a plan to close one of two high schools, either Anderson or Highland High. The decision on which of the two will close will be made next month. The high school that closes will be used for grades 7-9.
The board also decided to close four elementary schools -- Forest Hills, Edgewood, 29th Street and Killbuck.Anderson's current middle schools would then become elementary schools. The changes will be implemented in August. The changes were brought about be troubled finances and a dramatic decline in enrollment. In 1971, there were more than 20,000 students in the district, but that number declined to a little more than 9,000 this year. Much of the decrease was attributed to the loss of General Motors jobs that decimated the city.
