AVON, Ind. -- Police arrested a third-grade teacher accused of downloading child pornography from the Internet onto his school computer.
Scott Swiontek, 43, was arrested Wednesday on charges of child exploitation. He was released on $50,000 bond.
Officials at Hickory Elementary School sent a letter to parents about the situation and scheduled a meeting at Avon Middle School Friday at 7 p.m. to discuss the arrest.Hendricks County Prosecutor Pat Baldwin said investigators have no indication that any children were harmed. Swiontek was placed on paid leave, RTV6's Norman Cox reported.According to court documents, school officials began an investigation after an outside consultant found questionable images on Swiontek's school computer. Investigators said Swiontek visited an Internet site and began to download pornographic images on Jan. 9 while officials were monitoring his online activities.Steve Pearl, president of the school board, declined comment, saying the case was a personnel and legal matter.Swiontek also taught Sunday religion classes at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Plainfield. The Rev. Kevin Morris said Swiontek was terminated from his position, but he also said there was nothing to indicate that there could have been a problem."None whatsoever. Nice guy, and he's been very active around here and involved in other things," Morris said. "Everybody's just stunned."Brandie Tilford, who has three children at the school, is considering pulling them out."My husband's been trying to talk me into home-schooling them. Now I'm starting to get really convinced to do it," Tilford said. "I didn't want this. I wanted them to be with other children."
