INDIANAPOLIS -- Homework time may be a nightly tradition at kitchen tables across central Indiana, but for children without homes, one group is filling the gap with a mobile alternative.

School on Wheels offers one-on-one tutoring to children at homeless shelters four nights a week, 6News' Grace Trahan reported.

Last year, the group helped about two dozen children each night. But with poverty on the rise, the need for volunteers and financial support is only growing.

"What they need the most is a caring volunteer to sit down with them every day and remind them that school work is important," said School on Wheels founder Sally Bindley.

It's estimated that 3,000 children across Indiana are homeless on any given night.

For those who receive tutoring from School on Wheels, the one-on-one time is an opportunity for stability, safety and learning.

"Our kids love coming to tutoring at Schools on Wheels. It is an important part of their day," Bindley said. "It is the only time in their day someone has made an appointment to see them. That's how important they are."

The goal of the program is to foster knowledge to help the children break the cycle of poverty.

School on Wheels has 12 locations throughout Indianapolis. They tutor Monday through Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Volunteers can sign up for an hour at a time.
