Principal Delays Printing Of School Paper's Sex Article

Panel Of Adults, Students To Make Recommendation

POSTED: 5:27 pm EST February 9, 2006

The principal of Noblesville High School says an oversight committee needs to review an article about oral sex before it appears in NHS's student newspaper.

Principal Anetta Petty ordered that a student-written article about the repercussions of oral sex be omitted from the paper's Feb. 3 issue, saying a committee of teachers, parents and students should decide whether the subject is appropriate.

The committee will meet next week to discuss the article. The panel will make a recommendation to Petty, who will make the final decision, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

Students involved with the article said they wanted to publish something relevant to their peers and to address what they believe is teens' casual attitude about oral sex.

"Basically, the story is about informing, and the emotional effects and the physical effects," student reporter Kristine May said.

The newspaper's adviser, Teresa White, concedes the article deals with a sensitive subject, but she says it was handled in a mature way.

"I think that it's factual in nature -- informative," White said.

The paper's staff is confident that the article will be published, Carmack reported.

"I think its well written, and in context, I don't think that this subject would offend people," editor in chief Jill Gingery said.
