Professor Wrestling: Trump Trumps Vince
The Donald Makes His 'WrestleMania 23' Pick
POSTED: 11:40 pm EST March 1, 2007
Listen up!Class is in session. It's lecture time, and Bobby Lashley is the topic.
This week, Donald Trump chose (or was given) Lashley to be his "representative" at "WrestleMania 23" in the "Hair vs. Hair" match against Vince McMahon.I disapprove. Why? Several reasons. First and foremost, Lashley can't wrestle. To put him against another guy who has limited ring skills is a waste of time. I'd much rather see Lashley defend his ECW belt against Mr. Kennedy in the big show.Who should get the match? I'd say The Great Khali. I know, he's the worst ring worker on the planet right now, but this match isn't about the wrestling. It's about Trump winning. Vince McMahon, kids, is going to get his head shaved in some form or fashion. So to waste a title match (Lashley's) on an already weak WM23 card is dumb. With Khali versus Umaga, you have Trump trumping VKM with a bigger monster -- a monster who in my estimation is more popular with the WWE fan base than Lashley. How that happened, I don't know -- but crowds seem to scream more for the unintelligible Khali than they do the ECW champ.Plus, if you pair Khali with Umaga, then you don't have to pay for what may be the worst match on the card: Khali vs. Kane. The battle of the K's isn't exactly awe-inspiring. Sure, they're both unstoppable monsters, but they're two boring monsters. That's not "WrestleMania." This is the biggest show of the year, and we're paying extra dough to see it. That means extra effort should be made to put on a stellar card. Khali vs. Kane just doesn't cut it in my eyes. Some are also saying that the only reason Lashley is in this match is because WWE couldn't come to terms with Hulk Hogan to face Umaga. That may be true, but even if Hogan is out, it still doesn't make sense to waste Lashley in this spot. Again, I say reward Mr. Kennedy with another shot at a title, and pair him with Lashley.A few of my online students have weighed in on this matter. The best letter came from Steve-O of Albuquerque, N.M.:Hey Prof:Vince had what I grudgingly thought was a pretty good gimmick. Umaga? Of course. The current bad guy of the WWE. A perfect choice. A bully, heartless, can't speak -- perfect for Vince. I waited eagerly for Trump's choice.Bobby Lashley?Bobby Lashley??What did this guy do to deserve such a monumental push? What's next? Bobby Lashley-O's? Bobby Lashley Support Undergarments? Why not pull out that Russian beast they've been promoting? It would have been a great way to give him HIS push!Bobby Lashley is an impressive human being, with muscles on top of muscles. But he's about as exciting as watching paint dry.Bobby Lashley? Good Grief! My thoughts exactly. Good grief.Of course there is a saving grace here. Word has it Stone Cold Steve Austin will be the special referee in the match. He'll certainly add some entertainment to the spectacle, and hopefully we'll see him give bad old Vince a crew cut when it's all over. For more on Trump, Vince, Lashley and "WrestleMania 23," make sure to download the "Old School, New School" podcast this week.
