Irish Bartender Gets Last Call On 'Idol'

Smithson Voted Off Show

The Irish bartender won't be the next "American Idol."

Carly Smithson was voted off the show Tuesday night, after a performance the judges thought was one of the best. In a night that featured performances of the songs of Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, Smithson performed "Superstar" from the Webber and Tim Rice musical "Jesus Christ Superstar."

"Idol" judge Simon Cowell apologized to Smithson, saying his compliment must have been the kiss of death.

But the judges see a bright future for Smithson. Randy Jackson predicted "big things."

Smithson said that she's proud of herself and is happy.

The other person in the bottom two was also a surprise to the judges, Syesha Mercado.

But Brooke White gets to sing again, even though she broke one of judge Paula Abdul's cardinal rules by stopping her song and starting from the top.

The show is now down to five finalists. Joining Mercado and White in the running for the "American Idol" title are David Archuleta, David Cook and Jason Castro.

Wednesday night also marked the second time in a week that both President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush have made special appearances on a television show -- by announcing that the "American Idol" charity event, "Idol Gives Back," raised more than $65 million.

The president recently appeared on the game show "Deal or No Deal" and first lady co-hosted an hour of the "Today" show.
