INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis family was revealed Saturday as the recipient of a new home as ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" takes on an ambitious project on the east side for this year's season finale.

Bernard McFarland is known for giving his time, energy and money, but now he and his family will be on the receiving end of a lot of love, 6News' Todd Wallace reported.

When representatives of the show knocked on his door at 2356 Oxford St. Saturday morning, McFarland experienced a lot of emotion.

"It was surreal. It was like, 'Can this actually be happening?'" McFarland said. "I was almost like back in the day with Publisher's Clearinghouse, but it was actually Ty Pennington."

In a week's time, McFarland's home will be transformed into something he may have only dreamed of having, but deserves.

McFarland works for Indianapolis Public Schools and runs an organization called Pack House that helps keep children of the streets.

"It's just a little mentoring and neighborhood organization that we get together," he said. "We go out to museums, movies and kids come back here and play basketball."

By taking children to museums, libraries and setting up reading groups, McFarland is determined to help them appreciate their world, including what's often right in front of them.

"I always tell them we spend a lifetime searching for diamonds abroad and we have gold and diamonds in our own back yard," McFarland said. "That's how I've always felt about this area."

McFarland was born in the same community 37 years ago and has lived in his current home with his three children for eight years.

While he's spent money to help others, his home's condition has deteriorated. The new one will be built by Estridge, an Indianapolis-area homebuilder.

"What's going to happen here this week is but an example of what can happen when the power of all of us comes together," said Paul Estridge Jr., president of the homebuilder.

The McFarland family left its home Saturday, bound for a Paris vacation provided by ABC. The old home will be demolished on Sunday, and a new home will be built from Monday through Friday, April 3.

The new home will be revealed to the family for the first time on Saturday, April 4.
