INDIANAPOLIS -- As eager spectators looked on, construction began Monday on the home that will belong to the Indianapolis recipient of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

Fans of all ages are spending part of their week watching the home in the 2300 block of Oxford Street go up in a hurry after the previous home was quickly demolished on Sunday, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

"I have watched every edition of 'Extreme Makeover,'" said Arleen Baker. "I love that show."

Spectators are parking in a lot across from the Indiana Fairgrounds, dropping off food donations and board shuttles to the site of the home.

Miller Transportation employees are taking people from the parking lot to the home after getting a call from their boss Sunday night.

"(He) asked me, 'Hey, can you do some work for me between 8 (a.m.) and 2 (p.m.)?'" said Rita White, who drove a shuttle bus. "He said, 'It's 'Extreme Makeover.' I was like, 'Oh yeah, I'll do it because I watch the show all the time.'"

Some families brought their children along to use the project as a spring break field trip, hoping to turn it into a teachable moment.

"She understands they are helping a community. When I told her we're going to come down here today, she grabbed a hammer and said, 'I'm ready,'" said Tamie Mei Gipe of her daughter. "When I explained we couldn't use our hands today, she went and cleaned out her allowance ... to give to the family."

Some spectators simply wanted to catch a glimpse of host Ty Pennington and others involved with the show.

The shuttles will leave the fairgrounds between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
