Professor Wrestling: 'WrestleMania' Wrap
Classic Or Dud?

Listen up!!Class is in session. "WrestleMania 25" is history. Did you see it? If so, you saw a classic match between two legends. You were also subjected to five minutes of Kid Rock, like it or not. With that teaser, let's take a match-by-match review of the Houston show.
Money In The Bank Ladder Match
C.M. Punk won a contest many thought Christian would win. As usual, it was an exciting romp with ladders big and small (Hornswoggle was involved). The only aspect I didn't agree with was having behemoths Kane and Mark Henry in there. They slowed down a match which is usually high-octane and thrill-filled.
25 Diva Battle Royal:
"Santina" Morella won. That's Santino in a dress and a bad wig, kids. This was a drag. Why would WWE do something so dumb on the biggest night of the year? Because those watching had already paid their $54. Fool me once…
The Miz and John Morrison vs. Primo and Carlito Colon
…fool me twice. This one aired before the actual pay-per-view. Word has it the match was bumped because Kid Rock was there and was going to perform come heck or high water. The Colons won, by the way. No Kid-ding. As reader Michael Bindis put it: "I paid for a wrestling show, not a concert. But wait, I forgot, as Vince McMahon says, he's not in the 'rasslin business.'"
JBL vs. Rey Mysterio
Rey won this baby in less than 25 seconds, and JBL retired afterwards. A surprise squash match is annoying. I paid to watch wrestling. So how about a little wrestling?
Chris Jericho vs. Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Ricky Steamboat
I enjoyed how Mickey Rourke came into the ring and mixed it up with Jericho after the Legends were defeated. My only gripe is that Rourke's punch that put down Jericho looked like it was thrown by Mr. Burns of the Simpsons. Not exactly a lot of oomph there. As reader Dan Kirk put it: "You could have slid one of Jim Duggan's 2x4's in between Jericho's face and Mickeys punch!" Amen. Also, am I wrong to say that for $54 I don't want to see wrestlers way past their prime? I don't think so.
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
This match could have stolen the show, but fell just short of that. Matt's win was the logical choice here, and I'm glad that's how it played out. Jeff, at the finish, took a huge fall from a really tall ladder. It looked like it hurt. Well worth the money, in my opinion.
Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
Yep, this one stole the show, as the Deadman went 17-0. It was more than I could have ever expected out of an Undertaker match, and Michaels gets the lion's share of the credit. I'm not saying Taker didn't do his best, but Michaels showed once again that he can make anything infinitely better. Wade Keller, who runs prowrestlingtorch.com, mentioned that this match alone should go a long way in solidifying Michaels as the best wrestler of all time. I think he's right.
Edge vs. Big Show vs. John Cena
Yawn. Big Show, while entertaining on the microphone, just isn't worth my pay-per-view dollar in the ring. While Cena won (as I predicted), it may have been more fun to see Edge somehow weasel out a victory. WWE also dropped the whole love-interest angle between Vickie Guerrero, Show and Edge. Huh. That's what made this fun to watch in the first place.
Triple H vs. Randy Orton
The problem with both this match and the Cena-Edge-Show match is that they followed the great Michaels-Undertaker contest. Nothing could really top that. And when we came to this match, I have to admit I was looking at my watch waiting for it to end. I knew Triple H wasn't going to lose, so it was just a matter of how he was going to get it done. That's great for Hunter, but boring for me -- the paying customer.
Bottom line: this show gets a grade of B-minus from your professor. So much time was wasted in the four-hours, (ring entrances, pre-produced packages and Kid Rock, especially) I didn't get the feeling WWE was really trying to put on the greatest show in wrestling history. Three matches out of nine were outstanding -- but that's way too low of a ratio. Speaking of numbers, we had a little contest in this column where I asked readers to correctly guess the outcomes of the WM25 matches. No one had nine right. No one had eight right. Three people had seven right. I put those names in my mask…and drew: Carl Wick. Way to go Carl! Your prize package is in the mail. For everyone else who entered, a very sincere thanks from yours truly.OK, time to scram.Class is dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting, hailing from Parts Unknown.
