Celebrity Chatter: Super Bowl Halftime Incident Offends
Timberlake Apologizes For Jackson's Wardrobe Malfunction
POSTED: 1:42 a.m. EST February 2, 2004
Oh, you nasty boy. Justin Timberlake was definitely a surprise guest at the Super Bowl halftime show, especially when he ripped away a portion of Janet Jackson's leather outfit and exposed her breast.
While Timberlake is apologizing for the "wardrobe malfunction," the NFL is promising that MTV Networks will never produce another halftime show.
"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime," said Joe Browne, the NFL's executive vice president, according to the Associated Press.
MTV Networks has produced the Super Bowl halftime show since 2001. MTV released a statement shortly after the incident:
"The tearing of Janet Jackson's costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance. MTV regrets this incident occurred and we apologize to anyone who was offended by it," MTV.com reported.
CBS issued a statement apologizing to its viewers. "CBS deeply regrets the incident," said LeslieAnne Wade.
Here's Celebrity Chatter's take on the incident. Upon close inspection, it appears that Jackson was plenty prepared for the display. A jeweled star was deliberately placed and covered part of her exposed breast.
While some reports say that Jackson appeared stunned, in looking at photographs and watching video, the incident looked entirely choreographed. Wardrobe malfunction? How about stunning the world on live television?
It is estimated that 100 million television fans and 72,000 fans in Houston's Reliant Stadium saw much more of Jackson than expected.
If Justin's trying to one-up his ex Britney Spears, who made front page headlines with her MTV kiss with Madonna, how about leaving the rest of us out of it?
My mother called me soon after the incident and put it all into perspective.
"I remember when halftime was all about marching bands," she said.
Meanwhile, it looks like Super Bowl XXXVIII will go down in history as the most skin exposing ever. Mark Roberts, an Englishman who has a Web site devoted to his more than 300 streaking attempts, was carried off the field in Houston after removing his clothes just before the second half kickoff.
Roberts on his Web site, thestreaker.org said that he would attempt the streak at the Super Bowl.
His Web site claims he is hoping to be interviewed by Jay Leno, then head back to jolly old England and that he was "looking to run down the line up of America finest football players, grab the ball, and score a touchdown!"
Roberts was tackled by New England linebacker Matt Chatham before he could complete his plan.
Kidman has returned to the comfort of home in Australia, leaving the United States on her private jet immediately after finding out she was not an Oscar contender, according to The Daily Telegraph.
She's taking a break before starting to film her next movie "The Interpreter" with Sean Penn, where she'll play a United Nations interpreter who finds out about an assassination plot and becomes a target.
Meanwhile, her film "The Stepford Wives" will be released this summer.

Nicole Returns To Sydney
Was Nicole Kidman surprised and disappointed by not getting an Oscar nomination for her role in "Cold Mountain"? Could be.

Paltrow's Baby Will Be U.S. Born
A British magazine is reporting that although Gwyneth Paltrow is planning on bringing up her baby in England, she'll deliver in the United States. Paltrow's pal Madonna is allegedly the friend who convinced Paltrow to give birth in the United States. The reports also say that Paltrow wants a home birth and will have her baby at her mother Blythe Danner's California home under the watchful eye of the same doctor who delivered Rocco Ritchie, Madonna's second child. The report was from London's Hello Magazine. Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin were married shortly after Paltrow's pregnancy was announced. Their child is due in the summer.
