Actor JEREMY PIVEN is convinced period TV shows such as DOWNTON ABBEY and MR SELFRIDGE are a hit because viewers are pining for the pre-Internet age.
The star plays the title role in Mr Selfridge, which tells the story of the launch of famous London department store Selfridge & Co at the beginning of the 20th Century.
The British drama has become a ratings hit and its success, along with that of aristocratic epic Downton Abbey, has convinced Piven viewers want an escape from the technology-obsessed modern world.
He tells The Lady magazine, "It's just a simpler time when people really had to communicate with each other and they could not hide behind text messages, email or any of that stuff. Maybe we're all longing for that in some way."
