Motown The Musical to close on Broadway

BERRY GORDY's MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is set to close on Broadway for 17 months next year (15), so producers can work on the show's international appeal.

The curtain will temporarily come down on 18 January (15) at the Lunt Fontanne Theater, but the musical will hit the stage again in July, 2016, according to Billboard.com.

A production is planned in Britain next summer (15).

Producer Kevin McCollum says, "We are only saying farewell to Broadway for now. We are leaving on a strong note, because we have a plan in place to come back even stronger. We’ve seen that Motown The Musical demonstrably appeals to a wide range of audiences. The passionate response to our show and the Motown catalog puts us in a great position to arrange a successful return, while at the same time Motown The Musical branches out nationally and internationally."

The stage show centers on Gordy's Motown Records empire and features music from some of the label's most popular artists, including Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Supremes.
