Repairs Could Close Some Indy Pools For Summer

6 Pools On Indy Parks' Repair List

Repairs to fix leaky pools could close several Indianapolis-area aquatic facilities for the summer.

Indy Parks and Recreation released a proposal on Monday to fix six pools at a cost of more than $7.5 million.

Agency spokeswoman Paula Freund said many of the facilities have fallen into disrepair over the past 10 years, leaking constantly and losing large amounts of water.

The initial proposal includes performing repairs at Bethel Park Pool, Wes Montgomery Pool, Gustafson Pool, Willard Pool -- all outdoor facilities -- as well as La Shonna Bates Indoor Aquatic Center and Thatcher Park Indoor Pool.

Bethel Park Pool would be closed starting this summer and would not reopen until after the summer of 2011 in an effort to fix leaks causing the facility to lose 100,000 gallons of water a day, Freund said.

Repairs at Wes Montgomery Pool would force the facility to close this summer and the next, while both indoor facilities would be closed this summer only.

Work at Gustafson Pool and Willard Pool would close the facilities in the spring and fall of this year, respectively.

"Indy Parks has placed these pool repairs on a high priority list and will work to not only fix the problems but make enhancements amenable to the communities they serve," Indy Parks Director Stuart Lowry said in a press release Monday. "This is a very serious problem. We are approaching these decisions about pools very conscientiously, taking into account user groups and nearby alternatives to pools for summer recreation."

Freund said plans for repairs could change after a series of public meetings to discuss problems and possible solutions. The meeting dates would be announced later, she said.
