45-Year-Old Man Won't Leave Mom
Man Won't Talk About Money, Moving
POSTED: 12:13 pm EDT April 28, 2009
- Dear DoubleTake,I recently met a 45-year-old man. He is kind very and loving. The problem is that he still lives at home with his mother. She is retired and receives a pension from a good job, but he takes care of her finances. He works in human services and does not make a lot of money.I am 42-year-old professional woman who owns her own small home. We have talked about marriage, but every time I bring up his mother or money he changes the subject.I don't want to live with his mother or to be the breadwinner of the family. I wonder if he's afraid to leave her and if I should I invest anymore time in this relationship.
Do you need a second -- and third -- opinion about a problem in your life? Ask Double Take and you'll get two points of view: one from Eddie, a married family man in his early 30s, and one from Betty, a single woman in her 20s.E-mail questions to doubletake@ibsys.com. A new column is published every other Tuesday. To be considered for publication, please keep letters to fewer than 300 words. If you feel more background information is needed, consider adding it as a postscript. Because of the volume of the mail received, Eddie and Betty offer advice only to the letters that are chosen for publication.Double Take writers are not trained psychologists and their responses should not be taken as a substitute for professional advice.
