ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- An organization that helped round up families to take in Haitian orphans has now redirected that effort to helping children in crisis in Indiana.Safe Families for Children has numerous volunteers, such as Brad and Jayne Bok, who have opened their Zionsville home to children in need to help them avoid falling into the foster care system, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported."We work with families that are in crisis to help them take better care of their children and improve the situation that got them into a crisis," said Krista Davis, director of Safe Families.
Placements last for varying periods of time, from overnight to a few months. The Boks, who have cared for four children, currently have two sisters, ages 3 and 6."These kids are brave. They're flexible. They're loving," Jayne Bok said. "We get more than we give when we take in somebody."Last month, Safe Families was contacted to see if the organization could find families willing to take in hundreds of Haitian orphans that could be sent to Indiana."By midnight, we knew we could place up to 300 kids that were in crisis," Davis said. Those children were not allowed to come to Indiana, at least in the short term, but the effort opened the eyes of volunteers."There is an outpouring when there's a tragedy, but sometimes we lose sight of what's right in our neighborhoods," Bok said. Some of the families who were willing to take in Haitian children decided they were also willing to care for Hoosier children."In the last two weeks, we've had 135 new families step up and say, 'I want to become a safe family,' and that's for Hoosier kids," Davis said.As the program becomes more familiar with other social service agencies, Davis expects the need to grow and for families such as the Boks to be put to good use.Volunteers are not compensated, but Bok said a hug is all the payment she needs.More Info: Safe Families Indianapolis
