Dating After Divorce Can Be Dilemma For Kids

It's difficult to start dating after divorce. How much should you tell your child? How far should you let a romantic relationship go as a single parent?
"Children want their parents to stay together, and it's very difficult to see their parents splitting up," Dana Merritt of Children's Hospital of Michigan told Detroit television station WDIV.
Merritt said there are a few things that you can do as a parent to make this process more acceptable and comfortable for your child."Be sensitive to the fact that they've already experienced a lot of loss. It makes them very nervous if you're out of their sight, especially in those early months," said Merritt. When you do begin dating, communication is key, she said."It helps you and your children if you strike a balance. Let the children know you're going out with friends, but at the same time let them know they are your first priority," she said.Merritt also suggested that parents reassure children that they will not leave them, that they are there, and that the family is going to get through the situation together."Also, tell them that you would become a very cranky person if you didn't have time for yourself," said Merritt. It's important as a parent to ensure your children that they are your first priority, but also not forget that you are a priority, too. Take time for yourself and explore romantic relationships the right way.
