65TH ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBES

Writers Refuse Talks With Globes Organizers

Stars Unlikely To Attend Awards Show

POSTED: 9:40 am EST January 3, 2008

There might not be much star power at the Golden Globes this time, if there's any at all.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which stages the Globes, had hoped last-minute negotiations with the Writers Guild of America would allow the show to go on. The guild previously had said that its members would not work on the Globes or the Oscars.

The Golden Globes are set for Jan. 13 on NBC. But the striking writers are refusing to negotiate with Globe organizers about staging a picket-free ceremony. And the Screen Actors Guild said that it will advise celebrity nominees and presenters to boycott the show.

"The WGA has great respect and admiration for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but we are engaged in a crucial struggle that will protect our income and intellectual property rights for generations to come," the Writers Guild said in a statement. "We will continue to do everything in our power to bring industry negotiations to a fair conclusion."

Earlier Wednesday, before the WGA statement, HFPA President Jorge Camara issued a statement of support of the writers' efforts.

"We strongly support the WGA and the efforts they are making on behalf of writers, and applaud the fact that they have agreed to allow certain industry awards shows to move forward with WGA writers and be broadcast," Camara said. "Much like the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Film Independent's Spirit Awards, we want to enter into an agreement with the WGA that will allow the entertainment industry to celebrate the outstanding work of creative individuals in addition to millions of fans nationwide."

"It is only fair that we be afforded the same opportunity as these other awards shows," Camara added.

Now in its 65th year, the Golden Globes annual honors outstanding achievement in film and television.
