New Laser Hair Removal Safe For People Of Color

Option Doesn't Harm Skin, No Matter How Dark

POSTED: 6:25 pm EDT September 11, 2007

There's a new option for thousands of Hoosiers with darker or tanned skin who are looking to get rid of unwanted hair.

Dee Dorsey, an African-American woman, was tired of her sideburns but knew that getting rid of them with traditional laser hair removal was not an option.

"At the time, there was no way for them to actually do the procedure," Dorsey told 6News' Stacia Matthews.

That's because hair removal lasers did more harm than good to skin with darker pigmentation. Treatments often left scars, blotches and discoloration.

Dorsey was left with the tedious task of getting rid of the hair herself by waxing and clipping and using creams, which did not give her the best results.

But now Dorsey is getting smooth skin with just a few zaps from the Cool Glide, a laser that works like most hair removal machines but with one exception. The Cool Glide is designed to not harm skin, no matter how dark.

With the Cool Glide, hair is gone for good. No more waxing, electrolysis or razors.

"It targets the hair follicles, and it allows us to miss the pigment; (it) does not discolor, but attacks the target, which is the hair follicle,” said Dr. Janet Turkle, of Phases at Turkle and Associates.

The Carmel plastic surgeon said the laser works especially well on black men who develop razor bumps from shaving.

Most areas need several Cool Glide treatments to permanently reduce unwanted hair. Prices range from $75 to $500.

For Dorsey, every penny is worth it. She is so pleased with the results, she's having her underarms treated.
