INDIANAPOLIS -- A crisis counseling team was made available Monday outside the Falcon Point apartments to help last Friday’s tornado victims cope with the aftermath of the storm.Wicked winds demolished or damaged all 218 units in the apartment complex, leaving dozens of families without a home. The tornado also hit John Marshall Middle School, where classes resumed Monday.Unlike long-term grief counseling, the team is providing psychological first aid to anyone touched by the tornado and those who might be reliving the 2002 tornado that touched down in the same general area.
Kim Walton, of Community Health Network's Gallahue Mental Health Center, told 6news Staying Healthy reporter Stacia Matthews that the team is available to listen and answer questions.Venting, she said, is a healthy step toward healing."Some people will come through this and have no problem whether we do anything or whether we don't do anything. But providing that psychological first aid on the front end helps people get through the process a little bit faster," Walton said. "It helps them be able to think more clearly, make decisions quickly, kind of get on with moving forward."Walton encourages people who need to talk to take advantage of the counseling. Surprising emotions can lead to nightmares, headaches and acute stress disorder. The team will return to the school on Tuesday if counselors are still needed.
