President-elect Barack Obama's top health adviser stopped in eastern Indiana on Monday night for a town hall forum on revamping the health care system.

Former Sen. Tom Daschle (pictured) was at a forum at the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department, in Wayne County, to listen to citizens' stories, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

Dolly Sweet said she's facing a health care crisis, with the cost of her medication at $35,000 a year -- more than she can bear.

"I had breast cancer 20 years ago. I have lung cancer now," Sweet said, adding that she never started taking the latest round of medication when she found out how much it cost.

Daschle said he he's heard Sweet's concerns and those of others in a similar predicament.

"The costs involved, the access to health care and the quality overall is of great concern to the people of Dublin," Daschle said. "We've got to do something about it."

Dublin was Daschle's first stop in a series of forums focused on health care reform. Daschle said small-town meetings allow him to meet with first responders who see the issues daily.

With skyrocketing costs or no coverage at all, Fire Chief Bob French was one of several people who told Daschle that people are suffering.

"Older people, they either pay their rent or buy their medicine," French said. "We don't ask if they have insurance. We put them in the ambulance and we take them in the hospital and take care of them."

Sweet said her health problems have her down a bit, but not out.

"I've got a marvelous family. I've got a husband who has learned how to cook," she said.

Daschle said he plans to attend several more forums all over the country. He and a transition team will gather information and make reform recommendations to Obama.
